Renewable Energy Certificates

Every month, more customers ask us about green energy products.  Our best answer is in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs.

So what are RECs, exactly?

Renewable energy generators (in the Midwest and Texas, that usually means a wind farm) feed the physical electricity they generate into the power grid. Once it goes into the pool, however, it’s indistinguishable from all the other electrons generated from conventional sources. It’s impossible to track the specific “green” electrons from the point of generation to the point of use.

The RECs provide a certified exchange program that balances green production with green usage. Green generators create one REC for every megawatt hour of electricity they place on the grid. Once the physical electricity from those generators gets mixed into the grid, it’s no longer considered “green,” but the purchase of the corresponding certificates, sold by AGR Group and its clients, ultimately drives increased production and innovation in renewable energy.

As the US Dept. of Environmental Protection describes it, “The REC product is what conveys the attributes and benefits of the renewable electricity, not the electricity itself.”

On-Site Solar

Solar power is the feel-good news story of the energy world. Headlines touting falling costs and rising installations are gathering attention from politicians, policy makers and entrepreneurs.

It seems as though we’ve been hearing about the coming of solar power for decades, but its time has finally arrived. AGR Group and its partners are positioned to help bring solar to the mainstream.

Consider the following facts from The Solar Energy Industries Association.

  • 2013 was another record year for solar installation, with 4,751 megawatts of new photovoltaic (PV) capacity installed. That’s a 41 percent increase over 2012 (and 2012 was a 76 percent increase over 2011).
  • Solar accounted for 29 percent of all new electricity generation capacity added in 2013, up from just 10 percent in 2012, which made solar the second largest source of new electricity generating capacity behind natural gas.
  • The average price of a solar panel has declined by 60 percent since the beginning of 2011.
  • Close to 6,000 MW of PV are forecast to come online throughout 2014, which represents 26% growth over 2013′s record installation totals.
  • Together, new solar electric capacity projected to be added in 2014 will generate enough clean energy to power over 1.13 million average American homes.

Community Choice Aggregations

Community Choice Aggregations are an increasingly popular vehicle for providing homeowners and businesses with green-energy options. The effort involves public education and continued customer care, and AGR Group can help.

The concept of a municipal aggregation for the collective purchase of energy began in Massachusetts in the mid-1990s. The idea is to leverage the combined buying power within a jurisdiction (city, county or region) to secure a lower price for its consumers. The system generally relies on opt-out participation, which means a resident or small business is “in” unless it chooses otherwise. Community Choice Aggregations (CCA) are allowed by law in Massachusetts, Ohio, California, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Aggregations traditionally have been designed to simply lower costs, but with increasing awareness of climate change and demand for renewable energy’s, CCAs are taking on a distinctively green tint. The movement is especially prevalent in California, where several recent aggregations have resulted in a residents’ ability to choose from a variety of energy packages containing various amounts of renewable energy.

While the incumbent utility continues to provide for delivery of the energy, as well as billing and emergency response, the municipality is responsible for a much of the customer communication and inbound information requests.
