California’s endlessly clear skies have done little to alleviate the disruptive drought, of course, but they have produced historic solar and wind energy outputs. Both the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) have hit record highs in renewable energy delivery this year.

33110301_sSDG&E announced that on August 19th of 2015, the utility company hit a record 1,042 MW of renewable generation on its power grid. The company also stated it has delivered 33 percent renewable power in the previous 12 months, the first time a California utility has achieved that mark.

CAISO saw a new peak the following day, on August 20th, when it reported a statewide record for grid-scale solar generation of 6,341 MW.

These renewable records are in line with California’s clean energy goals and lend support to a new legislative bill that aims to increase green energy in the state and increase job creation in the clean energy industry. Currently there are nearly 45,000 jobs in the state’s clean energy sector. Proponents of the bill expect that number to hit 1.2 million jobs by 2030.

California isn’t the only state legislating new green energy goals and increasing opportunity for growth. President Obama’s new Clean Power Plan calls for 32 percent reductions in carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2030. Each state must provide its own initial plan to meet the standards by 2016, with final plans due by 2018.
